Dear Reader,

We would like to invite you to read the second newsletter created in the framework of the SMART project and which comes after the project has been underway for just over seven months. This    means that whilst we still have lots of work to do in pursuit  of  the    overall project aim to develop Mathematical teachers’ digital educational culture for enhancing pupils’ engagement and achievement, lots of progress has been made already. This newsletter will focus on those achievements and will also describe some of the plans for the next year.

Second transnational project meeting

The  second meeting  of  the  SMART-MT  project  was  held  in  Ploiesti, Romania, in School “George Emil Palade” Representatives from all partner organizations attended the two-day meeting 15-16 April,2019.

The meeting was an opportunity not only to deepen the collaboration between the partner institutions, but mainly to take important decisions about project management, intellectual outputs and dissemination activities. Partners discussed activities defined in the application form and the updated Gannt table. The most crucial point of the meeting was agreeing on the format and requirements for further developing of the intellectual outputs IO1 – IO4.


Partners from Lithuania, Latvia, Poland, Greece and Romania have already implemented “The State of the Art Review” which identified the reasons for low pupil’s achievement in math, what competencies should the teachers possess to apply apps, which mathematical areas of pupils need to be developed in order to solve real life situations, promoting pupils creativity, critical thinking, etc.

The two e-directories of existing mobile apps have already been created. The aim of these directories – to provide math teachers with digital tools in order to improve pupil’s (aged 10-13) mathematical skills and address underachievement in math. The first e-directory presents the mobile apps which enable math teachers to differentiate and individualize the teaching/learning process according to students’ cognitive abilities, interests, and learning aims: knowledge, comprehension and application.

The mobile apps are classified according to the area of focus: numbers and calculations, expressions, equations and inequalities, geometry, measures and measurements, also mixed.

The second e-directory presents a collection of existing mobile apps tailored to be used both inside and outside the classroom to enhance pupils’ critical thinking and creativity through STEAM subjects: Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics.

These sets of mobile apps will enable teachers to make the traditional lessons more attractive by integrating innovative, student friendly and playful learning tools.

The SMART partners are starting to work on developing two mobile apps “The Math App” and “Eureka App”. These mobile apps are based on the findings of The State of the Art Review and micro learning methodology. 

Key numbers :

  • 55 participants in the State of the Art Review;
  • A collection of 69 mobile apps to improve pupils’ maths skills in EN and NA languages;
  • A collection of 40 mobile apps to enhance pupils’ critical thinking and creativity in EN and NA languages.
